Day 47: Ouzo, haloumi and baklava

As I write this I am sipping slowly on some potent Ouzo – a Greek liqueur made from aniseed, which gives it a liquorish flavor. Hopefully it will give this blog update some flavour.

My workbench.

Santorini greeting us with a smile this morning.

At the breakfast table - Donna updating her blog.

Our apartments.

We are on the island of Santorini. We are on the island of Santorini – we can’t stop saying it! The island is so beautiful and we have only seen the town of Perissa that we are staying in. We woke up this morning with a beaut view of the Mediterranean. The weather is still cool here but when the sun come out it is fantastic! We had some rain today as Donna and I were making our way back to our apartment from the grocery store. The weather changed so quickly. We walked into the grocery store and were not there for 15mins and the weather had gone from partly cloudy to completely overcast and rainy and the temp dropped by at least 4 degrees.  There Donna and I were discussing what we were going to make for lunch and drooling over some ideas when the icy droplets from the heavens encouraged us to start running with heavy bags of food and all. We laughed off the idea of the bakery and headed for home.

Earlier on I had a pork gyros pita, which was unbelievably tasty and it was good to have some other meat rather than lamb or chicken. For R20 this was a real bargain

Not our apartments.

We walked around the beachfront today and on the beach of Perissa. It has dark beach sand, like a greyish black. In summer this sand COOKS and you need to lie on beach mats. But today the sand was just warm and so awesome to walk on. We saw a COMPLETELY naked woman on the beach lying with some dude, but thankfully he had pants on. I had to look twice to make sure that she was naked and then instead of looking 3 times I asked Donna to check if she was in fact sunning herself in the nude. Donna confirmed it! There were other topless girls around obviously not as courageous as the one previously mentioned – I realized that we were now in Europe.

Our transport.

For lunch we snacked on feta, olives, spicy peppers, cucumber and tsatziki. Then, a small dos was in order to keep within the traditions of the Mediterranean. Then Greek coffee made with ground coffee that I bought at the spice bazaar in Istanbul. Absolutely savage stuff – so incredibly tasty – I love it so much!! And we had some very fresh chocolate chip cookies.

Post afternoon dos snack.

After the rain we strolled to the bakery to get some rolls and baklava and when we got back we started to make supper. The weather had turned and was sitting at about 16 degrees C.

Yes it was this cold.

Donna trying to pinch some of the man's bread.

Potato cubes with butter and pork sausages with a side of tsatziki, spicy peppers and the freshest roll I have ever had, all this washed down with Mythos beer – a delicious Hellenic beer.

Tomorrow and Sunday we are hiring a car. It costs R175 per day – super cheap. It is actually more expensive to use the bus as transport. Can you believe it!? We can apparently see the whole island in about 4 hrs. But we will pack some chow and drinks and go and explore this tiny little gem and cover every square inch of it. Looking forward to seeing the sun set over the Caldera.

Tomorrow night, the lady who runs the hotel, Margarita, is taking us to a typical Santorini jol. She said she will pick us up at around 11:30pm (ja that’s late hey) and then we will go and party. It is an opportunity that most tourists wouldn’t get as it is a local jol. Going to be a fat party and really looking forward to it! We haven’t been out once at night during our travels as we have not been too sure of the areas and also there isn’t much point in going to a bar where all the tourists go – we can do that in Durban. Tomorrow night will be very different!

We will be posting some great pics of the island tomorrow and no doubt some flavoursome stories to tickle the taste buds.
