Place: Deck 6 of the Prevalis Ferry taking us to Santorini
Time: 15:17
Picture This:
Dozens of little rectangular cottages all positioned closely to the sparkling blue bay with a narrow cobblestoned road. Each a different colour, one with blue walls and yellow window frames, another red with green frames, orange with white window frames and the ever popular crisp white with sky blue frames and all have the terracotta tiled roofs.
This is the first stop called Halki, on our 14 hour ferry trip to Santorini and it infused such exhilaration in both Craig and I, that as I look to Craig (who had dug into my emergency cold weather stash and was sporting my long polka dot socks, russian top and travel towel) for his reaction, he is already gone, running to the top deck to take pictures. This was the moment that I realized that we are in fact ‘island hopping’ around the islands of Greece in all their glory.
We have been aboard this huge floating machine for about 6 hours so far, and I have to admit that it has been one of the best trips so far. We were directed towards our seats only to find out that we are sitting in a lounge/bar area with small comfortable chairs and an epic panoramic view of our journey where we even spotted dolphins playing in the distance.
Craig and I thought ahead this trip and bought a bag of snacks for the trip as we expected the prices to be ‘steeper’ on board (and we were right). So its been a day of eating peanuts, chips, chocolate cookies (similar to oreos), chocolate chip cookies, candy, 2 banana’s and an apple…we are hoping that this will suffice the 14 hour day.We have stopped at 3 different islands already and each of them differ remarkably from the other. The second island (Diafani)had the more traditional Greek look with white houses and blue window frames all behind a cute path leading up the hill to the adorable small chapel on top of the hill.
The 3rd stop is obviously a bigger and more ‘touristy’ island, with hotels and bigger buildings, but not losing the charm of an ideal Greek Island.
The 3rd Island, Kasos, also delivered us with a group of jolly soldiers carrying musical instruments and a smile. I am sitting listening to them ‘jamming’ on their acoustic guitars, and various stringed instruments. I feel like Kate Winslet in the Titanic when Leo takes her to the bar and they dance to the cheery music and I have to stop myself from flinging my husband from his seat and twirling him in and around the lounge area.
Its hard not to sit and thank God for the pleasures that he throws us with everyday, no matter how big or small, but these soldiers were another blessing to add to our volt of wonderful stories to tell and the memories of their melodies will stay with me always.
Speaking of blessings;
11pm arrived and without a minute to spare, we pulled up to the very windy island of Santorini where Craig and I were met by the bubbly Margerita (the cousin of the owner of course) who jabbered the entire trip to our hotel (all 10minutes of it) and even took us to a nearby bakery (not sure if it was a good idea) to get some milk. As you may have guessed, we walked out with milk, fruit juice, pizza for a snack now, 1 bag of chocolate chip biscuits, 1 bag of vanilla cream biscuits and hungry devouring smiles.
We arrived to an adorable little place on the hill (so it looks in the dark) and we are once again super exited to be in Santorini and see this postcard picture perfect little island.
It is now 00:13 and we are in bed ready to shut our eyes and awake to an actual dream come true.
