A liter of beer in the middle of the day is never a good idea for me. As my eyes generally just want to close – not that I need any encouragement to go to sleep at anytime of the day. But we were walking past a restaurant in the old town of Rhodes and saw people drinking out of massive glasses shaped as boots. Donna insisted that I have one and so I agreed. As the boot arrived I realized that this wasn’t a pint but an actual liter. Even though I sipped it slowly, I could feel the alcohol rapidly infiltrating my system. The cheeks warmed, the lips and tongue numbed and the chair became more comfortable. Eventually the only thing going through my mind was the cool Mediterranean breeze.
As the boot of beer impeded my swagger, I chose a slower gait in order to maintain some stability – in other words, I engaged diff-lock and shifted into low range.
We ambled through the streets of the old town and bought some things. I bought a thing, which you use to make Turkish, I mean Cyprus, I mean Greek coffee. I also bought a new pair of slops as the ones I have been wearing have done some excessive mileage since we have been travelling.
This is the ferry that we travelled on from Turkey to Rhodes.
Hotel Angela where we are staying for R195 per room per night - biggest score yet!!
A castle in Rhodes
Before the old town we visited the two ports, which service Rhodes. They are remarkably clean and don’t have that characteristic stench of most harbours. This is obviously something they take pride in and do very well in executing. There are some massive boats in this harbour. Some for personal recreation owned by some tycoon of note. These boats are in the region of R10 million and are really a thing of beauty. One of the cruise liners we saw had 10 levels of apartments and after checking on the net found out it weighed 122 000 tons. This boat is truly humungous and quite surreal when you stand next to it. It is called the “Celebrity Equinox”. Google it.
The beer boot.
Was the beer boot.
You can see the outer most parts of the west coast of Turkey.
Part of our running route.
This morning we went for a nice run. Getting the mileage up now and feeling good. We ran along a path, which runs right next to the sea. It reminded us of doing the two oceans and running over Chapman’s Peak.
In the evening we went for a walk to take pics of the sunset. We took some great ones as the sun ducked behind the section of Turkey which wraps around Rhodes to the west.
A very loooong 14 hour journey awaits us tomorrow as we travel to Santorini by ferry. Armed with anti-sea sickness tablets and padkos we are as prepared as we will ever be. We will most probably finish our books.
As the Greeks say Athio sas ( good bye)
