Day 43: Turquoise Blue Monday

Place: Terrace of V Go hotel, time: amazing sunset

The bathroom in our room is positioned very close to the edge of the roof, which slopes down from above rather sharply and therefore gives plenty of opportunity to bang my head on the ceiling – increasingly so as I walk closer to the basin.  To illustrate this further, if I stand just outside the shower and face the basin (at this point my knees are slightly bent and my head is touching the roof) I can see the area from just below my pecs to just below my belly button in the mirror above the basin. I am sure you can imagine, that as I walk closer to the basin I might as well get onto my knees to brush my teeth.

Alarm goes off at 7am this morning (forgot to cancel it on my cell phone from the previous day) I jump out of bed, bang my head on ceiling, switch off alarm and put cellphone away. Stand up, bang head on ceiling and swear at myself. After the fury settled I slumped back into bed and tried to dose. This wasn’t successful and Donna and I decided to get up for a run/walk – Donna ran and I walked.

Eventually it was breakfast time. Thank goodness! My stomach had woken me up before the man at the mosque around 5am, with a vicious request for food and a relentless pursuit thereof when none was delivered. I was bladdy happy to throw some olives and cheese at my stomach to stop the rumbling. I have developed a huge love for olives in the morning – but when in the med…

After breakfast we looked at some options for places to explore and decided to hit Oludeniz beach, which is the most photographed beach in Turkey and by the pictures you will see why. The beaches in Cape Town are still more impressive, but at least I can swim in this cool water and I am the biggest thing that swims in the bay – no great whites. We took a Dolmus(a minibus which runs a specific route through town and surrounds the whole day) from our hotel to the minibus station and then hopped on a minibus to Oludeniz. We stretched out like reptiles on the warm, smooth pebbles on the beach from 11:30am to 17:00, with a small break for lunch. It was comfortably hot. Even Donna got into the cold Mediterranean TWICE for a dip, hoping to appease some of the sun’s strength, but to no avail, as she was dry 10 mins later.

Goose bumps courtesy of the Mediterranean sea.

Paragliding is a popular form of entertainment at this beach. We opted not to go for it as it was 80 euros per person - not a lot of cash if you have a job. It was very tempting but it works out that we would have spent 4 nights accommodation which is far more valuable right now.

The pebbles proved a challenge each time we got out the water - bruising our feet at each step. I was close to crawling on some occasions. It is worse getting out as your feet are so cold from the water.

Toughen up man!!

It was an awesome day on the beach and we entertained ourselves with the stones and reading. We were lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins go by.

Another quiet evening tonight, watching the sun go down, sipping on some coffee and waiting for the braai at our hotel.

We are off to Rhodes tomorrow. Our ferry leaves in the afternoon and it takes about 90mins. Can’t wait to explore the island on a scooter with my lady.
