Day 59-61: TUTTI ITALIA

Place: Hotel Capernnelle, Rome in Italy

Hot Screaming tempers, tiny cars parked between even smaller cars, hand gestures, pizza, espresso, pasta, green white and red flags, cheese, wine, kissing on both cheeks and a glimpse of history around every corner…this is the Italy that I have always imagined and this is exactly what has been ‘served’.

Thursday the 31st May
We got our bus into town to make our way to the beautiful Positano. The road is winding and narrow, but not stopping our bus driver from racing down the hills, hugging the curb and hooting to warn oncoming vehicles that we are there.
Lets just say that I have had a craving to go on a rollercoaster ride for a few months now, and feel this way no more.
Positano is like the ‘Santorini of Italy’, but rather than the white and blue apartments, Positano has the stereotypical villas stacked up along the mountain edges in shades of red, pink, yellow and cream.
We strolled down the hill, zigzagging along the road where we came to the town centre and tourist hub. It is really beautiful and we finished it off with a homemade gelato of chocolate and strawberry before our journey home and to a delicious home cooked meal by the owners of our B+B.

Palma and Massimo speak not a word of English, and in the best game of charades ever, they invited us for a homemade dinner of pasta and meatballs in a fresh tomato sauce. It was a truly invaluable experience, which we will always remember and cherish.

Friday the 1st June,
We checked out early that morning so that Palma could get the rooms ready for her arriving guests. A quick goodbye with tears from our endearing hosts and we were on our way for a long day of trains, buses and WALKING.
We missed our first train, and made it to Napoli in a very drawn out 3 hours, but that was soon forgotten as we fell into our first class seats on the Eurostar for our hour journey to Rome. Craig was transfixed by speed at which the train was going and before we knew it we were in Roma and getting onto another train to our hotel on the outskirts of this gigantic city.
With no taxi in site, we decided to walk the estimated 2km with our bags on our back, front and in hands. Eventually we found our amazing hotel where I soaked in a bubble bath (fist time we have had a bath in ages-took advantage) and recovered after the very long day.

Saturday the 2nd June
Afraid that the Vatican would be closed on a Sunday, Craig and I decided to explore this tiny country first. We arrived to an extremely long queue of eager tourists, and were bombarded with guides assuring us that we would skip the queue if we took a tour, but Craig and I would have none of that and decided that we would stand in line and take our chances. 1 hour later, we were in the high walls and passing the poor individuals who took the guided tours.
It was jam-packed with people and we headed straight for the Sistine Chapel where we ‘oogled’ over the paintings, sculptures and magnificence of the Sistine Chapel. I couldn’t take the large crowds so we snuck through a nearby exit to the St Peter’s Basilica and took loads of pictures in the amazing square.
With map in tow, we walked to nearby hotspots and taking in the Italian charm of the little streets, exclusive stores and running into beautiful structures around every corner.

Walking through the streets of Rome is enchanting and romantic, non-existing music plays in your head as you wander in and out of the beautiful streets.
I am super exited for tomorrow, as I get to take Craig to all of my favourite spots in Rome and cant wait to see his jaw drop as he lays eyes on the historical Coloseum.

YAY a spar.
